Sina Weibo was launched in 2009 by telecommunications company Sina, after the Chinese government banned Western social media networks including Twitter and Facebook from operating in the country. Since 2016, users have been able to post messages of up to 2,000 characters – up from the previous limit of 140, the same as Twitter – though the 140-character limit still applies to re-posts and comments.
