Angelini Pharma: Unhiding women in health

German pharmaceutical firm Angelini Pharma created the Unhiding Women in Health campaign to highlight the challenge of the compulsory use of masculine-gendered language.

Introduction

Even in 2021, true equality for women was still a long way off. This particularly affects the healthcare sector: From gender bias in research, diagnostics, and therapy to the lack of gender- appropriate language, even though a large proportion of employees in medical professions are female. These women are not reflected in common language usage*. This is more than obvious in the mandatory texts of pharmaceutical advertising, regulated by the Therapeutic Products Advertising Act (HWG): "... ask your doctor or pharmacist / Fragen Sie Ihren

Arzt oder Apotheker." Just the male form is used, women remain linguistically invisible. Angelini...
