After playing a central role in the pandemic, Germany's hospitals found themselves in a new, critical situation in 2022: medical products, services and energy prices had risen so sharply that many clinics found themselves in extreme financial difficulties.
According to a survey of German hospitals conducted in August 2022,96 percent of the hospitals surveyed lacked the financial resources to offset the cost increases resulting from inflation. At the same time, income was capped by the healthcare system.
This financial gap threatened to widen, to the detriment of employees and the high quality of care.
