The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak caused a rapid increase in video-on-demand activity but it's advertising-supported services (AVOD) that have gained the most, according to data from Samsung Ads.
Across five major European countries, consumption on AVOD services has increased by over one-quarter (29%) between January and June 2020. In comparison, time spent watching subscription services (SVOD) has increased half as quickly, up 13%.
As a result, AVOD is now as popular as SVOD across EU5 countries. Consumers spent one hour and 22 minutes watching AVOD content per day in June, one minute more than SVOD content.
